How an announcement at LAFF got interesting

Now we told you about John Singleton’s beef with Hollywood and his final payout from a case against Paramount. That gave Singleton a new view about how to approach Hollywood. He got a chunk from the system ad was ready to enforce a new set of “John’s Laws” to get things done.
During an interview last year with Elvis Mitchell, Singleton broke out the bludgeon of his new dicta: Negritude. A vibe where YOU make demands on the STUDIOS to get your project started, made and finished. It is a remarkable strategy.
Maybe it was because his pockets were newly fat from breaking Paramount down to a settlement rather than a trial. Maybe it was that his life had changed over the years
and he’s creeping up on the “I don’t give a fuck” decade. But when he announced it folk kinda sorta laughed.
Because Negritude is like a game of dominoes that ends before the boxes are filled. You tell the studio to make the film the way you want. And if they don’t want it that way then they don’t get to make your film.
But what if your making someone else’s film? What if they’re just handing a script to you that’s been sitting on the shelf? What if you’re a director for hire?
I doubt you’ll be in the position to tell them to make your joint. Hell I doubt that there will even be a meeting where you can scream that over the table. Don’t believe me?
Well it seems as though, in the sparkly precipitation of new stories about old legends-from Biggie on TV to the Ice Cube NWA drop-Singleton’s Negritude hit kind of a reef when it comes to the Tu Pac big screen story. As reported, Tu Pac was shuttled away from John like a half eating steak dinner. Seems he neither owns the right nor weighs heavy on public opinion enough to manage a meeting with studio heads about the film. Lawd knows Suge can’t help him.
The cautionary tale here? Be careful what you announce. Especially if it’s in such a giant forum as the LAFF. Because when they decide to move on a story near and dear to your heart. Negritude may not be there to help you. Check the article here.
